My name is Joseph Obranovic and I was born and raised in Toronto. Growing up in a large urban environment, I became intensely interested in the causes and treatment of mental illness. I earned a diploma in Social Services from Humber College and a degree in Psychology from Trent University.
I started my professional career working for Regeneration Community Services in 1993. In 1995, I was chosen to start a new case management program in partnership with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). In 1999, I moved to the Canadian Mental Health Association where I worked for their Assertive Community Treatment Team. During my time, I was seconded to start a new and innovative case management program in partnership with the Psychiatric Department at St. Joseph’s Health Centre.
In 2008, I was hired by St. Joseph’s Health Centre’s Urban Family Health Team/Family Medicine Department as their Community Mental Health Worker. My role included teaching medical residents from the University of Toronto about working with mental health patients. I also taught other disciplines including social workers, nurses, occupational therapists, pharmacists and dietitians.
